VCU Stuns the World

#11 seed Virginia Commonwealth almost missed getting invited to the NCAA
Tournament and now they have strung together a collection of upsets to reach the
Final Four. Their latest stunner over the last remaining #1 seed left, Kansas, was
their biggest win yet and some analysts are even calling it the biggest upset in March
Madness history. Kansas’ star forwards, the Morris twins, are now left to ponder
their futures after VCU pummeled Kansas from behind the arc to counter the Morris’
strong post play.

Perhaps the most well known figurehead of the Rams is not one of their players,
but head coach, Shaka Smart. A young up and comer, Smart looks to be in prime
position to get hired by a big time basketball program after leading his squad to an
impressive tournament showing. Smart is the heart and soul of this team and it is
clear from the VCU players’ tenacious play on the court that they respect and admire
him so much. No team plays harder and fights more ferociously on every possession
than these Rams.

Their improbable run echoes George Mason’s run in 2006 as they similarly upset
bigger named teams with bigger stars. Will VCU one up George Mason by making it
to the finals and possibly even wining the championship? Coach Smart believes so as
he stated there was only one thing left to do: “Win the whole blank thing.”
